Mr. Know-it-all: "Well, no. But, Britt, you'll miss out on the beautiful design aspect it brings to the wedding. Think of all the photo opps you'll miss out on!"
Britt: "Yeah, maybe you're right, Mr. Know-it-all. But, we still can't afford that. And the fact remains I can't remember the last wedding I went to where I actually ate the cake, or cared that I didn't get a slice because I was either, A.) too drunk at that point, or B.) I was full from the three course meal I just ate."
Mr. Know-it-all: "Well, I do know of an alternative..."
Britt's ear perk up....
Mr. Know-it-all: "Get a fake!"
Britt: "A fake cake?! Thaaaat's craaaaazy talk!!!!!"
After my riveting convo with Mr. Know-it-all, I went to a couple websites that specialize in making fake cakes that you RENT for the night and send back the next day. The cakes even have a section where you can add a piece of real cake for the cutting sequence. I don't know if I'm super down with this. It seems so silly. But I guess if you look at it like a piece of art that contributes to the overall look of the wedding...I guess it could be cool...maybe? Take a look for yourself:

No. Wait. I take that back about this maybe being cool. I'm sorry, but this is just weird, right? You would literally be renting this as a prop just for pictures. This is why I say these cakes are blatant c*ck teases. It's like all the fake cakes got together and said, "Hey, let's look all tasty and perfect and when the guests think they can eat us, we'll reveal our plastic insides and make them cry!" Cue evil fake cake laugh...
So, looks like the boy and I won't be renting our cake. We'll just have to choose something else creative and dessert-y that will fit in the budget. If I had it entirely my way, instead of a cake, I would serve oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter chocolate ice cream with heaping glasses of Fat-free Lactaid. Or we could just throw a case of pink champagne and a bowl of strawberries on a table, call it dessert, then call it a night. What-ever. We'll figure it out.

I have a cousin who got strawberry cheesecakes for each table. It doubled as the table centerpiece and the dessert. Everyone loved it!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Andrea told me to check out your blog :)
jana - that is a seriously awesome idea. i may have to steal that one...
ReplyDeletethanks for checking out my blog! andrea told me you're a graphic designer, so i'll have to keep that in mind :) I'm sure we'll get a chance to meet at Andrea's annual Christmas party. looking forward to it!
definitely! its a great way to knock out two things in one. and with how expensive wedding cakes are, it might be cheaper to do cheesecakes on each table.
ReplyDeletei hope to have my website up soon (blissfulwish.com). but for now you can find me on facebook and twitter.
andrea says you have lots of different and creative ideas, so cool! see you in december!

We're getting a small, small cake (about six slices) and he gets to pick everything about it.
As our "dessert," all my great Aunts are making their famous dainties and cookies and squares. Loving it!
Can't wait to see what you decide!
I'm a gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free bride, so cake, for me, is right out. Honey and I are buying some kind of raw dessert I can eat (and a few others with similar food allergies) and having the caterer slice up sheet cakes in the back. Whole Foods, Costco, you know the drill. Hoping to spend about 2-3 hunnert. We'll see.
ReplyDeletewe're getting a really small fancy cake... Melody from Sweet & Saucy (sweetandsaucyshop.com) does the most amazing desserts... so. crazy. good. And not ugly. they are really cool and modern. anyway she's doing it for about $90, and our dessert budget is $150, so the rest is getting split up to buy a few cakes and pies from Costco or Ralphs or whatever. we'll see how it turns out... but definitely take a peek at Melody's blog and tell her I sent you :)
ReplyDeleteDude, so when I heard about this option, animated discussions immediately commenced in regard to what we called the "FaCake" (prounounced "Fuh-CAKE"). Final decision was that it was lame, and most certainly would only serve as the c*ck tease you saw it for. Plus, I think the rental is quite expensive, anyway. We went with Costco cakes (chocolate, buttercream, and carrot at $16.99 a pop), but then my parents started having misgivings about not having a "real" cake to show in the pictures (Costco doesn't spell "classy?"). Turns out one if Ty's friends from college is starting out her own cakery, so she baked us a three-tiered one for about $250-300. I coulda given a isht less about the taste of what I considered a Potemkin cake, purchased only to satisfy my parents, but it was actually a delicious (and aesthetically pleasing) addition to our Costco spread. I'll send a shot of the cake to your e-mail in a sec, and if you want her info, I'd be glad to give it to you. RAWK!
ReplyDeleteat one wedding we went to, when it was time for dessert, they had a giant cake appear with full on sparklers shooting out the top. it was tacky and magical all at once.
ReplyDeletethen they just had an awesome dessert bar with strawberry shortcake, brownies, cookies, ice cream, whatever.
omg rentable cakes! lmao!!
ReplyDeletefor our wedding we had cupcakes! they were super affordable and so delicious and everyone loved them. our baker also has also done dessert bars where she does a small cake and cookies. she's awesome! you should check her out http://asweetdesign.info/
