Wait, You Mean I Gotta Get Another Ring?

Dude. Seriously? I have a ring. A sparkly, antique-style heirloom diamond engagement ring. And it's GORGEOUS. Isn't ONE ring that symbolizes our love enough? Apparently not, according to the wedding world. I'm convinced that jewelry stores invented the "two rings for the bride" rule as a means to squeeze out an extra 3 grand from their customers. Have I mentioned how much I love the bloodsucking bastards of the wedding industry? It's like you slap the word 'wedding' on something and the price triples.

ANYWAY. I've been pondering this notion of a second ring, and as much as it annoys me, it also intrigues me. Just like the many brides before me, I too, am considering buying a second ring... Here is my reasoning:

  1. I don't buy expensive jewelry. I don't even really own any jewelry. A necklace and my engagement ring are the only pieces of jewelry Mike has bought me in the 6.5 years we have been together. (I'm more of a wine and dine me kinda gal). So why not spend a couple hundred bucks on jewelry for myself? Especially a piece that will have actual meaning to me. A band symbolizing our actual marriage? Yeah, I'd say that has some meaning
  2. I would spend less than $200 on it.
  3. We can fit it in our budget easily.

So for these reasons, I think I'll go for the second ring - not because I'm SUPPOSED to, but because I WANT to. Here are a few I like:

So what are you gals gonna do about the two ring thing? Springing for a wedding band too? Or just rollin' with the ole engagement ring?

  2. Given that I'm genuinely worried about my engagement ring gauging out the eye of my future babies, I'm going for a sensible everyday wedding ring. It doesn't need to be flashy or expensive - I already have one of those. I just want some choice and practicality, along with my symbolism.

  3. I don't like the idea of wearing two rings on one hand and none on the other, so I'm going to get myself a funky ring as a right-handed wedding band. For me, the engagement ring wasn't the one I was really looking forward to. It was the big one that went with the marriage, not the the question that I wanted.

  4. All are beautiful choices and would look great with your ring.

  5. Those rings are beautiful! I'm getting a second band for the same reasons as you. We don't usually like to spend money on jewelry, and a wedding ring is one of the most meaningful pieces I will ever buy. Also, Blue Nile, where my e-ring is from, has great deals, so we won't have to spend too much on it.

  6. Nope, I'm not doing it. Don't want the second ring so I am sticking with the engagement ring as the dual duty wedding band. :)

And since you mentioned the expense of the word wedding, check out my previous post regarding that thought...has a funny video in it:

  7. wow! i totally agree with A Los Angeles Love- my engagement ring could wreak havoc on a small child (hell- sometimes I worry about our dogs, lol) so i'm in the market for something simple, with a little edge, i've found a bunch of contenders on etsy and the like. Your choices are super pretty- would you tell us where they're from?

  10. mine doubled as both for the first year, but then everyone thought i was just engaged. so, olli bought a simple band to go with the simple engagement ring for our first anniversary. now my finger looks funny if i just have the engagement ring.

  11. I got my FH's ring on ebay, too. :) We're going more for the symbolism, less for the I-just-shelled-out-WHAT? kinda jewelry. I found a beautiful, ornate infinity band in Ireland that was less than $100 after shipping, and the hubz will have a titanium band with the infinity symbol engraved for less than $50. Thoughtful, meaningful, beautiful, and not breaking the bank. My wed band doesn't work with my e-ring, so i moved the e-ring over a finger, and it sits nicely on my mid finger. :)

  12. This post was so liberating for me. I don't know why I hadn't thought of us buying only one ring before, especially since I know a handful of women who don't wear their engagement rings because they don't fit against their wedding bands. Also, I don't give a crap about tradition.

Anyhow, I was so excited after I read this that I ran to the Mr. and told him we didn't need to buy me a wedding band after all and we could use the money we had budgeted for that on more beer for the reception instead (that's how I think, yo.)

He looked at me look I was an alien and said, "but you have to have two rings. It's how it is done."

    And that's that ;)

So if someone finds a cute wedding band for less than $200, please email me.
