YO. Mama hit the jackpot on the hair & make-up, kiddies. Her name is Julia Papworth, and she's so.freaking.talented. Not only did she and I go to the same high school, but she's kind of a badass in her industry. Julia has done everything from magazine covers, to print ads, to movies and red carpet events, to runway shows, to music videos and lucky for me (and you!), she does weddings! Girl does it ALL and does it with style. And, oh, did I mention she kicks ass? One of her most recent gigs was doing Kendra's hair for the Jay Leno Show. Check out how fly she made Miss Kendra look:
From edgy to elegant, Julia has the chops to do practically anything... which is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered for the type of wedding we're putting on. I believe when I emailed my initial inquiry to Julia, I told her I wanted to look "fly as shit" for my wedding. And her response was, "I can do fly as shit!" So, yeah. I could tell right away that we were going to get along. Check out some more of her work:
Holy-balls fierceness:
Funky Rad Awesomeness:
Gorgeous Wedding loveliness:
And Totally Avant-garde Amazingness:
See! I told you she can do it all! There were so many breathtaking images on Julia's website, it was hard to choose which ones to show off. All the gals in our bridal party are getting services from Julia on our big day as well, and I cannot wait to see how fierce the results are. So to all my Cali-brides: Get your ass over to Julia's site, JuliaPapworth.com and book her... You can also find Julia on Facebook, Twitter, and on Model Mayhem. My thanks to Julia for sharing all these gorgeous images with us, and an even bigger thank you to her for being awesomesauce incarnate. I cannot wait to work with her.
P.S. As a funny tidbit: I don't know if Julia remembers this or not, but when I was a freshman in high school, she was a senior. And I was dating one of her best friends at the time. And we ended up wearing the SAME EXACT dress to prom that year. It was hilarious.

I am Faux-Sho a Faux Bob Bride
Hair. I've got a ton of it. Long, thick, wavy, crazyballs, big hair. I have always enjoyed wearing my hair in funky styles. I've never really been into "just wearing it down" and forgetting about it. I'm a hairdo person. My hair is the only thing I'll blow the big bucks on beauty-wise. So naturally, I am going to focus hard on making my hair hella fly for the wedding.
Recently, I got my hair done in a faux bob updo and I fell in love with it. Because my hair is so big and wavy, I've never been able to have an actual real bob. It would be total frizz overload, annoying as balls on the upkeep and overall not a pretty sight... Which makes me sad because I LOVE the Marylin Monroe bob and have always wanted to cut my hair like hers, but alas... the faux version will have to do....
Here are some inspiration pics for my wedding hair. I want to make it a little more whimsical, more messy, and more high-fashiony than these, but you get the idea.

As for the ever important veil/no veil/hair flower question.... I have decided to NOT wear a veil. And instead I am getting a hair-piece custom made by the amazingly talented Nic from Tiaras and Fascinators. She specializes in the most gorgeous couture pin-up, retro hair-wear. I am currently coming up with a design that would work with my faux bob... something likely made of feathers and sinamay... Below is a shot of my hair in a faux bob from an event I modeled a bridal gown at (more on that later):

So what kind of hair piece do you guys think would look good with this hairdo? And if you have time, (and love me enough to do this), check out Tiara's and Fascinators and tell me which one you think would look the best. I'm clueless as of right now. Below are pictures of the designer modeling her own work. Isn't she gorgeous?! I can't wait to wear one of her designs. Let's just hope my hair looks as fly as hers does in these pics.
Thanks for your advice on the hair, loves! How are you guys doing your hair for the wedding?

Hunky-Dory Hair-Wear for the Half-Assed Hipster Bride
I've written A LOT about real hipsters, so I thought, why not give a shout out to all the poser hipster brides out there? I think they deserve some advice too. So here we go - it's the HALF-assed Hipster Bride Style Guide: Hair-wear Edition. So where do all these half-assed hipsters shop, you ask? Urban Outfitters of course!!! The oh-so-expensive but oh-so-awesome Urban Outfitters lured me into their online shop yesterday. I was so powerless against their fashion-forward offerings, that I had to buy something - but don't worry - I was able to justify my purchase...well kind of...I bought THE raddest Bowie shirt I've ever seen and probably will ever see, so it was essential right? Being that I'm the BOWIE BRIDE???? Right? Right? A girl's gotta represent, yo! And yes, I realize that by shopping at Urban, I can in turn call myself a half-assed hipster. If I found an ORIGINAL Bowie shirt from the 70's at a thrift shop with Cheez Whiz stains on it from the 80's, THEN I could actually call myself a full-blown hipster...but alas, half-assing it will have to do for now. Oh well!
Anyway, on to the hair-wear! Urban is a perfect option for the bride who wants something pretty but showcases some edge.

Far-out 'Fro-wear From VieModerne
I got some hella delish hair treats for you ballers to feast on right now. So strap on your Hammer pants and bust a move, cuz ya fro's about to get a funky fresh make-over.An old friend of mine, Finland-based photog, Sarah of Little Ark Photography , told me to check out Etsy seller VieModerne's hair-wear posthaste. And boy am I glad I did. I've been on the search for a different kinda hair flower...something with a little edge but still super feminine and pretty, and I think I have found it! VieModerne takes your average peacock feather and makes it into a piece of hair art. Check these out, and let the hair lust begin!
1. Now here's a hair flower a hipster bride could get down with.

2. This one may be my fave. I'm really considering wearing it for the rehearsal...

3. The pattern on this one to die! A great way to go bold without going too crazy.

4. See what I mean about the peacock feather hair art?

5. More peacock hair art!

6. I love the overlay on this feather. The perfect touch for a wedding with pops of yellow.

7. And just to show you a sample of her other work (aside from hair-wear), here's a gorg flower ring she has for sale. I would totally give these to the ladies of the wedding party to wear on the big day. Just the perfect little touch of color. And it's re-wearable!

Click here to go nuts at VieModerne's Etsy shop!

Rockin' Leia Buns on the Big Day

What comes to mind when you hear the word "buns"?
Warm rolls? Hamburgers? Brad Pitt's ass?
All great answers. But for many, particularly those who enjoy fiction of the science variety, the word "buns" can only allude to one thing and one thing only: Princess Leia.
You guys know that game, "Who would you rather..."? You know, where you're given two names - usually celebrity names - and you have to choose which of the two you'd rather have a go in the sack with? Yeah that one. And yes you've played. Well. I'm about to make a pretty bold statement. So brace yourselves. The one person who would win in a female on female battle of "Who Would You Rather..." is hands down, PRINCESS LEIA. Every time. No contest.
You put her up against heavy hitters like Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie, and Adriana Lima and every man's answer would STILL be Leia. I even put this theory to the test. I asked the men I work with (all TV writers) to play the game and they all chose Leia. Like it wasn't even a question. So clearly Leia's hair buns have something to do with this... So I thought, why not go for the dub bun look on the big day? You'll have your future husband AND all his fanboy friends thinking you're super fly. Dreams do come true!!!
But in all seriousness, I really do think it's a cool look, even though it's a little out there. BUT for the bride who's on the offbeat side, this look would be killer. Here are a few shining examples of how to work a modified Leia look.
Carrie Bradshaw's is my fave of the looks here. Ever since I saw her hair in that episode, I've always wanted to try it. Perhaps now I will!
Does your hair have the balls to rock the dub bun? Know anyone who has?
